World Community Arts Day

Australian CACD organisations joined Community Arts colleagues on February 17 for an online global celebration of Community Arts.

Box Hill Community Arts Centre, Beyond Empathy, Dusseldorp Forum, Centre for Creative Communities, Arts Industry Council (Victoria) Australia and Creating Australia shared their creative work with organisations from around the world.

The theme of the 2015 celebration was ‘Art as a catalyst for caring and sharing’ and aimed to create a World Festival Society for a day.

World Community Arts Day was initiated by English Community Artist Andrew Crummy with the philosophy –

“We can either react in fear or anger to the state of our world thus becoming part of the problem or respond creatively and become part of the solution.”

It began as a celebration for the life of Reg Bolton who died in 2006. Bolton was a pioneer of the ‘new circus’ and saw the circus’s potential for community development. After an amazing career as a performer and educator in the UK, Bolton moved to Perth, WA where he taught at WAAPA for 17 years.
